In 2022, the fire escape at 8-18 Queens Plaza South in Long Island City was inspected and welded by our team. The inspection looked beyond surface rust to the condition of the existing metalwork and its connections.
On an older exterior steel assembly, deterioration can be localized around brackets, joints, fasteners, welds, and other connection points rather than appearing evenly across the structure. The inspection provided the basis for the steel work that followed.
The condition assessment focused on areas where deterioration could affect the existing fire escape assembly, including its structural members and connections. A patch of surface corrosion does not necessarily indicate the same problem as section loss, a deteriorated bracket, a cracked weld, or a failed connection. The findings from the inspection informed the welding work performed on the structure.
For owners who need to understand what condition an existing fire escape is actually in, our fire escape inspection service explains what we examine before a repair scope is determined.
The welding work addressed the steel conditions identified during the project. Working on an existing fire escape requires attention to the surrounding assembly as well as the repair itself. The affected joint, connection, or structural component must be prepared so the new weld can properly address the condition without treating it as an isolated cosmetic repair.

The combined inspection-and-welding scope meant failing connections were identified and corrected in the same mobilization rather than discovered after a separate contractor had already quoted a painting-only scope.
